Tanzania among 20 countries practising early marriages

It has been revealed that Tanzania is among 20 countries in the world that have been practising early marriages.

Speaking during a two-day East African regional conference on child marriage, yesterday in Dar es Salaam, the Director of Gender, Children and Social Development, in the ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children, Tukae Njiku, said majority of women who got into early marriage have been found to be infected with HIV/Aids.

In Tanzania, on average two out of every five girls are married before reaching 18 years. The 1971 Marriage Act allows for girls as young as 14 (with special permission) and always allows 15 years old girls to marry.

However Niger with 74.5 percent leads the table, followed by Chad’s 71.5 per cent and Mali with 70.6 percent, while Djibouti has the lowest rate of early child marriage at 5 per cent.

Njiku said that 10 million girls in Africa are every year affected by early child marriages which deny them education and expose them to dangerous infections.

She added that early child marriage should be a public concern rather than treating it as a private issue, while majority of girls get into harm’s way.

Njiku suggested that it is time experts were trained to educate the public on the negative effects of early child marriage, saying laws were not enough to stop the practice.

However, Jane Magigita from equality for growth (EFG) said many children Tanzania have no birth certificates making it difficult to determine their ages.

Magigita said a good number of Tanzanian girls have found themselves in risky situations into their lives after becoming affected.

For her part, the Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA) executive director, Valerie Msoka, said that marrying off a young child not only violated human rights but was dehumanization.

She said the new constitution should spell out strategies to stop early marriages from the family level to the national level.

She added that from primary schools, pupils should be taught all about gender desk so that they may be able to report their cases because there has been a tendency of parents who are involved in the case to solve these marriage cases traditionally.

Forward, executive director, Naana Otoo-Oyortey said many young girls were forced into early marriages by their parents who had their eyes on the dowry.

He mentioned that some of the causes that push parents to force their children into early marriage as poverty, low education and marriage by adoption.

Apart from Tanzania other countries practicing early child marriages are: Bangladesh; Guinea; Central Africa Republic; Mozambique; Burkina Faso; Nepal; and Ethiopia.

 Others are Malawi; Madagascar; Sierra Leone; Cameroon; Eritrea; Uganda; India; Nicaragua; and Zambia.

The clinic is owned by an individual named Ruth Planas, who according to court papers, did not reveal the identity of the doctor, who has a Venezuelan background and might have left the states, CBS4 News in Miami reported. (Planas isn’t accused of any violations.)

Authorities are investigating Torres’ untimely death as manslaughter connected to the unlicensed practice of medicine, having collected evidence from the clinic in the wake of Torres’ death. They have not filed any charges in connection with the tragic incident.

Asked if Ghobadi would be giving more interviews, he said: “We are in the process of deciding what she will be doing. I have been engaged to help her decide what her next steps should be. I am an established entertainment attorney and I will be representing her from hereon.

“I’m the main party guy in the group,” rapper King Kevi told Radar in an interview from Passages Malibu, where he was finishing up a 30-day treatment for abusing codeine, also known as “sizzurp” or “drank.”

“I was the ringleader for getting it for everybody, because I had the hookup.”

He explained, “Everyone on Twitter says that Justin has posted pictures of sizzurp and then deleted them, but I have never seen him do it. I’ve only ever seen him smoke weed.”

But the narcotic beverage was popular with the MUCH of his posse until recently, Kevi claims.

“When Lil Wayne went to the hospital for seizures, that s**t got us down, like, that was someone I look up to,” he said. “After that, everyone else stopped doing that s**t. I just kept going. I was doing it basically every day.”

Kevi’s friends and family staged an intervention and shipped him off to Passages, far from the temptations of young Hollywood. “What I’ve been doing ain’t really good for me,” Kevi admitted. “When I’ doing that s**t, I feel good, but I’ve come to learn that I don’t need to do it like everyday.”

And Kevi says that Justin is totally supportive of his sobriety. “I talk to him everyday,” Kevi claimed. “He actually sent me some new headphones. He sent me a necklace too that’s dope with diamonds and gold on it.”

But he’s unsure how their relationship will proceed once he’s out of treatment. “Justin’s not really supposed to be seen with me,” Kevi says.

Some have called Kevi a bad influence on 19-year-old Justin, since it was his presence that coincided with Bieber’s increasingly hard-partying ways. And Kevi admits that he was the one who started planning the secret parties at Justin’s pad.

“I’m the main party guy,” he says. “I run everything.”

About six months ago, Kevi says, “Justin gave us the ok to throw the parties as long as we had everyone sign NDAs [non-disclosure agreements].”

“That took it to a whole other level,” he explains. “I’m bringing like 60, 70 girls. Justin started liking that.”

Now, Kevi says, Justin’s happy to be playing the field, unattached from former girlfriend Selena Gomez. As for rumors that Kevi swooped in and hooked up with her after their split, he says, “I’m not gonna comment on that.”

Kevi will spend some time in outpatient treatment in Newport, Calif., before hopefully linking back up with his BFF. “He’s not really supposed to be seen with me now, I guess,” Kevi says. “But we’re cool.”

Alieleza kuwa mtuhumiwa huyo ambaye alikuwa akifanya kazi pamoja na marehemu, alikiri kuwa na marehemu siku hiyo ya Ijumaa ya Juni 8 mwaka huu.

Alisema baada ya polisi kufanya upelelezi mtuhumiwa alikutwa na kiatu kimoja cha marehemu na nguo alizovaa siku ya tukio, ambazo zilikuwa zimetapakaa damu.

Kamishna Kova alisema kuwa mtuhumiwa alipohojiwa alidai kuwa marehemu alitoweka nyumbani tangu siku ya Ijumaa na baada ya kubanwa na polisi mtuhumiwa alikiri kuhusika na tukio hilo.
